Sports and Recreation

Moreton Bay plays an integral role in the sporting and recreation scene of the Sandgate area. Each year Good Friday the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club hosts the annual Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, Australia’s second largest bluewater yacht race. The Sandgate Yacht Club, Sea Scouts, Queensland Cruising Yacht Club and the Volunteer Coast Guard, all found at the entry to Cabbage Tree Creek, offer a variety of boating pastimes for all
levels of expertise.

Those seeking other adventures might like to investigate kite surfing, para sailing or wind surfing. For those who enjoy a slower pace and the peace and tranquility of nature, canoeing is another option.

Extensive biking and walking tracks extend from Boondall Wetlands to the Hornibrook Bridge and through the suburbs and around the coast, passing many of the parks, BBQ areas and the local swimming pool.

The Sandgate Golf Club is situated on Cabbage Tree Creek, which allows players to enjoy their round of golf with water views and sea breezes.

Every fourth Sunday of the month, steam engine enthusiasts gather at Bracken Ridge Park. This is a day for the whole family, with steam train rides and other activities.

Additionally, there are a variety of public facilities including cricket, soccer, rugby fields, tennis and squash courts.

Boondall is the home to the International Ice-Skating Rink where Olympian Steven Bradbury trained. The Police Citizen Youth Club has gymnastic, martial arts and a wide range of activities for all age groups. The Australian Goju Kai Karate Headquarters are also centered in Sandgate.

The Queensland Racing Industry Training Centre is based at Deagon Racecourse. Horses have been training on the beach at low tide at Sandgate since early in the twentieth century.
