It is as an accessible and attractive seaside resort that Sandgate made its reputation in the early 20th century. Because the town was easily accessible by train and the area offered relief from the hot Brisbane summers, thousands of people visited Sandgate on most weekends. Much of the pictorial record of Sandgate in this early period is scenes along the foreshore.
Sandgate also offered a range of other sporting and leisure activities. These included tennis, racing - both horse and motorcycle - and sailing. There were various club sports and four cinemas, including an open-air beach theatre at Shorncliffe (pictured right).
