Sandgate between the Wars

The late 1930’s saw significant changes in lifestyle in southeast Queensland which led to Sandgate’s decline. The opening of the Hornibrook Highway in 1935 meant that Redcliffe and Caloundra were more easily accessible to Brisbane residents.

First, buses and, after World War II, greater numbers of private motor cars encouraged people to travel longer distances to more attractive locations.

In a relatively short time, Sandgate’s popularity with Brisbane residents declined.  It became almost a forgotten suburb.
