Sandgate in the 1950’s and 1960’s was a sleepy bayside community.Click here to view larger image. The development of television contributed to the demise of Sandgate’s four cinemas. The community began to attract larger numbers of pensioners as many of the old grand houses were divided up into flats.
Additionally, the number of elderly residents increased,as a number of aged care facilities were established in the area. The Sandgate Chamber of Commerce, established in the 1950’s, was concerned with how to preserve Sandgate’s business district in light of competition from newly established regional shopping centres such as Chermside. The Chamber successfully lobbied the Brisbane City Council to designate and develop part of the First Lagoon Reserve as a parking lot to enhance Sandgate’s appeal to shoppers.
