Things to Do and See

The ‘great outdoors’ of the Sandgate district offers more than just a beautiful bayside. There are three natural lagoons full of wildlife, wetland parks, extensive cycling tracks, many parks and an abundant variety in birdlife.

The Sandgate shopping precinct in Brighton Road provides a traditional setting, friendly service and convenience. The rail station and the picturesque Einbunpin Lagoon create a relaxed, parkland setting across the road from most of the shops. There are also cafes with ‘al fresco’ seating for a relaxing break.

Reminders of the past abound in the district.

The historic Sandgate Post Office, the original Sandgate Town Hall and the Sandgate Pier are perhaps the most notable landmarks.

The Sandgate Town Hall, built in 1911, has become a distinct centre-piece for the area and, more recently, home to the local library. The town hall’s clocktower dominates Sandgate’s shopping precinct in Brighton Road.

The Sandgate pier is one of the district’s most prized attractions. It serves as an everlasting reminder of the area’s popularity in the early 1900s, when visitors would flock to the pier and foreshores, to bask in the sun and sand or take a stroll through Shorncliffe’s Moora Park.

The Sandgate Baptist Church is another historic landmark. Located on the corner of Flinders Parade and Cliff Street with sweeping views across Moreton Bay, the century-old church is prominently featured in many historic photos of the district.

There are many gracious old homes to admire in the district as well as an historical museum.
Rich in natural beauty, history and a fast growing cultural heritage, the Sandgate District is a leading day tour destination for both Brisbanites and visitors – a reputation it established back in the 19th century when it was the city’s leading holiday playground.

Sandgate’s central area and surrounds boast many public works of art, many created by local residents, others by professional artists.

In recent years the district has grown as an arts community through the creation of several new and active local arts and crafts groups.
