RAMSAR Implications
Dowse Lagoon has been listed as a RAMSAR site. Ramsar is the city in Iran where an international convention on wetlands was adopted. The mission of the convention is to conserve and wisely use the wetlands of the world. Australia is a signatory to this convention and, as such, the Commonwealth of Australia has certain responsibilities in regards to managing Dowse Lagoon. The main objective is to ensure that the ecological character of the lagoon is maintained through a wise use management approach.
The implication of this listing is that permits from the Commonwealth environmental protection agency (Environment Australia) will need to be obtained and that the ecological character of the lagoon should be maintained or improved. Im
