Dowse Lagoon

The Community Reference Group (CRG) of Dowse Lagoon, which consists of twelve volunteers from the local community, has set up this part of the website.

The Brisbane City Council has committed funds to investigate the problems of the Lagoon and develop a rehabilitation plan. Some preliminary technical investigations have been completed. The CRG will provide regular feedback on the process via a weekly column in the Bayside Star, as well as through this website.

About the project

Dowse Lagoon is a freshwater lagoon situated in the eastern Australian city of Brisbane in the suburb of Sandgate. Community input is being sought because Dowse Lagoon is experiencing some environmental problems. In particular, there is a situation of poor water quality which has produced seasonal midge infestations, algal blooms and a severe drop in the biodiversity of the lagoon, especially aquatic biodiversity. Subsequently, the habitat areas of the lagoon have become severely degraded.

The process to develop a rehabilitation concept plan has already begun and will hopefully be completed by the middle of this year (2003). This will be followed by a public display period where community members will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed plan. After the concept design is accepted by stakeholders, a detailed design can be produced based upon the concept plan. Without knowing what is to be proposed in the rehabilitation concept plan it is not possible to forecast at this stage when any physical works may start on site.
